Everybody's Getting an Award

I got knocked out when I was in Grade 2.  A big older bully from another section punched me on the face. I did not know what happened and why he punched me. What I remember is that I fell backwards after he landed his fist on my face. I went there because I was asked by my teacher to give this document to their adviser and unfortunately she was not there and then that thing happened. I did not tell my teacher about it but my mom noticed the crack on my lips when I got home then I told her what happened. Then I cried. Then she went to my teacher the following day which then talked to the bully's class advisor about what he did. I can't remember what happened next.

It was also the last time I was given a first honor award at school. After that year, I still was able to get some academic awards. There were 23 sections so being part of the pilot section was already an achievement, what more when you get to the honor roll. There were few recognitions given at that time every end of school year. The honor roll and some "best in subjects" awards. There was prestige, but I never thought about it really at that time.

But compared to what we see now, almost everyone at school gets an award. You can even see on your social media feeds that all parents are posting their kids' awards. 

This ain't limited to school. Even on other things, everyone seemed to be getting an award. If there are no awards existing for someone, they will create him a new one. And award giving bodies are also sprouting like mushrooms. Before, schools are begging for recognition from the industry leaders. Now, it's the schools who are the one giving awards to industry leaders. Like in media for example. Professional and veteran newscasters are chosen and given commendations by students who haven't even completed their studies yet about the field of these personalities whom they are giving recognition.

Then there are competitions where mere participation were given awards and prizes. No one's going home empty handed nowadays.

Everyone's a winner, so it seems. No one's losing. No one's failing. But the problem with this set up is on how we truly appreciate winning without knowing what it's like to lose.  It's like talking about darkness when light is the only thing you experience since birth. Another danger that we are playing with this thing is by making the young ones feel that awards and recognitions are rights rather than privileges for the few who worked harder and better than the rest of them. I think some of us can say we are already reaping its fruits in the workplace.

And the irony that award giving bodies and the award itself gain more prestige and mileage than the awardees is a big irony . Like what happens when mere students are the ones making criteria for recognitions to be given to people whom in the present they are only just dreaming to work for.

For sure, there will be comments or reactions like "these awards aren't important though later on in your life" and "you can't use this awards when you're working, etc". I agree with you. But that's not the point of this write up. Let's all admit that awards have impact on people's confidence and behavior later in life. They are meant to foster a competitive environment that will motivate people bring out their best. It also gives satisfaction to those who made it. But due to the "mass production" of it, it seems to lose its meaning and purpose, and actually defeating it.  People are becoming soft and whiners because of it. A lot feels they are entitled to get one without doing much effort because everyone seems to be getting some anyway.  Everybody's getting an award. Awards are dead.

If I could give an award to that guy who punched me before, I'll give him the heaviest fist award. He was the only person who was able to knock me out from all the fist fights I went through when I was young. I can still feel the impact up to this day.  I hope to meet him again soon. I hope he's not yet dead.

Versatile Blogger Award! – Salamat po :)

Versatile – matatawag kang ganito kung ikaw yung tipo na kaya mong makibagay at makisalamuha sa iba’t ibang uri ng tao o sitwasyon. Well-rounded ika nga.

Mula pa noon eh madalas na kong nata-tag bilang “jack of all trades”. Minsan may pasaway na susundutan pa ito ng …”master of none”. Minsan may katotohanan ito. Sa dami kasi ng bagay na gusto kong subukan o aralin, pag dumating sa punto na nagagamay ko na yung isang bagay o kaya ay nakita ko na kaya ko palang mag-excel, kasabay nun ang pagbaba ng interes ko sa bagay na yun. Marahil ay sa kagustuhan ko na subukan ko ang iba pang bagay kaya rin ganito na ang aking pag uugali.

Isa sa klasikong halimbawa ay ang una (at nag-iisang beses pa lang, sana masundan) na pagsali ko sa mga fun run. 5 kilometer run lang naman yun. Nung panahon kasi na madalas pa ko nagbabasketball, tingin sa kin ng mga kakampi ko eh ako yung tao na di napapagod. Tumatakbo, tumatalon, gumugulong sa loob ng 40 mins. Hehehehe. 

At yun na nga. Sinubukan ko ang fun run. Pinaghandaan ko rin ng ilang linggo. Siguro ay mahigit 100 din ang sumali. May ilan na tulad ko na baguhan lang. May ilan naman na matatawag nang “seasoned” sa pagtakbo. At yun na nga, natapos ang fun run, 5^th ako overall. Dapat nga ay 3^rd ako kung di lang ako naligaw sa pagliko sa huling lap, hahahaha! Siguro nga ay dahil batak pa ko sa kalalaro ng basketball at isa pa akong taong tagabundok na sanay sa lakarang akyat baba kaya ganun ang resulta. Nasabi ko sa sarili ko na kaya ko pala makipagsabayan! After nun, di na nasundan  ang pagtakbo ko. Hahahaha.

Pagdating naman sa blogging, matagal nang hilig ko ang pagsusulat. Dahil siguro mahilig ako magbasa simula pa ng murang edad kaya nagkaganito ako. Madalas na partner ang pagkahilig sa pagbasa at pagsulat. Matagal ko nang gusto ang mag-blog mula pa ng nauso ito.  Hanggang sa eto na nga. Nung una ay inakala ko na madali ang mag maintain lalo na at andun talaga ang passion ko. Pero habang nagpapatuloy ako sa pagsulat at pagbabasa, natututunan ko rin na hindi pala basta may maisulat ka na lang. May mga bagay pala na dapat isaalang alang para maging epektibo ang paghatid ng mensahe sa mambabasa. At ang makatawag pansin sa mga mambabasa ay isa rin sa pinakamahirap na bahagi ng pagbblog. Kailangan pala e gumawa ka rin ng ibang bagay bukod sa blog like yung Facebook page ko na The Ignored Genius (pa-like na rin dun sa mga di pa nakakapag like) at yung sa Twitter account ko na @ignoredgenius (pa-follow na rin).

At higit na mas lalong mahirap pala ang marecognize ka ng kapwa bloggers.

Kung kaya malaki ang aking pasasalamat sa pagbibigay pagkilala sa atin ng isa sa aking mga naging katoto dito sa blogosphere. Siya si Lawrence na siyang nasa likod ng “Colors and Grays” na isa rin sa aking mga inaantabayanang blogs sa araw araw. Maraming impormasyon at mga kaalaman ang hinahatid niya sa mga kanyang mga mambabasa kasabay ng pagbibigay ng kanyang matitikas na opinyon sa mga ito.  Bilang isa sa mga versatile blogger na nakilala ko, malaking bagay sa akin na ako ang bigyan niya ng parangal bilang isang “VERSATILE BLOGGER” awardee.

At bilang isang awardee, may ilang bagay na kaakibat sa pagtanggap ng pagkilalang ito.

1.  Bigyang pasalamat ang nagbigay ng award sa iyo. Huwag din kalimutang mag”back link” sa kanya.
2.  Magpost ng pitong bagay bagay patungkol sayo
3.  Magbigay ng award sa 15 iba pang blogger na tingin mong karapatdapat at ipagbigay alam sa kanila na binigyan mo sila ng award na ito.

 4.     I am a dekaphobic – kung mahilig ka sa pagkain at gusto mong madiskubre ang pinakatago tago na mga masasarap ng resto sa paligid ligid lang ng Metro Manila, si Michy the dekaphobe ang bahala sayo. 

 5.       Josh on Creek – rising from the dead (dahil matagal walang post). Buti at naging aktibo uli dahil malupet at interesting ang mga topics nitong si Josh. At kung arts and design lang ang paguusapan, siya na! 

6.       The Toilet Thoughts – No, this post is not about toilet humor. Pero tulad ng marami sa atin, malalim na mga pagiisip ay kadalasang nangyayari kapag tayo ay nasa loob ng toilet. Read more from ventocoseuss

8.       Bagotilyo – ang makatang romantiko. Kung nais ninyong makakita ng perpektong halo ng panitikan at modernong pagbblog, si Bagotilyo ang isa sa maibibigay kong halimbawa sa inyo. 

9.       Hoshilandia – sa kanyang sariling lupain, makikita dito ang pagiging well-rounded ni Hoshi. Ang versatility ay nagkatawang-blog at ito ay naging Hoshilandia. 

10.   Dxjayrock’s notes –kung matibay na pananaw sa mga bagay bagay, usaping pulitika man yan, sports, relihiyon at kung ano ano pa, eto ang para sa inyo. Kung may isang tao na halos lahat ng side sa mga bagay bagay ay katulad ng sa akin, masasabi kong si Dxjayrock na yung tao na yun.
