What Common Sense?

Common sense is often referred to as what most people believe to be the correct judgement or decision in a given situation. It is "common" since many would think that this decision will be picked by any normal person and that it's a simple choice that thinking otherwise is just plain stupid.

But we hear a lot of people saying that common sense nowadays are not that common. If you take time to digest that statement, you'll get constipated.  How can we call something not common as common? And if most people think the opposite, would that become the new common sense?

The way our society is doing, we might only be seeing the product of what we perceive to be the "common sense". Or is it that we are just using it as an excuse not to think deeper and just do as what we think other people would?

No overdose

Since we complain a lot about common sense being rare, it's high time for us to drop the idea of common sense itself. Let's quit being lazy and stop putting our high hopes in our decisions using plain old idea of what we think is being done by everyone else. Just think. It has never been that complicated.

  1. AMEN! I believe Common Sense is subjective, and what's common to one may not be to others. Best way is to use the brain, all the time :)

    Nice post Rogie!

  4. I understand about your dilemma about common sense. But there are ideas that are really "common sense" that is held not only by those who are alive but those who are already dead. It was passed on by the older generations to the new generations. There is a common sense that your hand will burn is you place it in the bonfire and it will stay true even if the current generation says otherwise.

The problem with the current notion of common sense is that some ideas are thought to be of "common sense" but are actually not. Dun nagkakatalo at nagkakagulo ang mga tao.

  5. "The way our society is doing, we might only be seeing the product of what we perceive to be the "common sense"." - THIS!!! Exactly.

Ine-equate na ngayon ang common sense with logic. And I have a problem with that. Kasi even if something is logical, it doesn't mean it's true. Also, iba iba tayo ng way mag-isip at magformulate ng logic. What they call "common sense" in western countries may not be the same "common sense" people have in asia. Baka na-ffrustrate lang tayo sa pagpilit na ang mga assumptions and beliefs natin should be the same as someone else because we think it should've been "common sense"
